I tore up some colored tissue paper and stuffed it into an empty tissue box. He pulled out the pieces and stuffed them back in for almost a half hour, took a break to tear them up a little, and then resumed the removing and replacing activity for another 10 minutes.
Those are colored craft sticks (Popsicle sticks) I picked up at the store for $2. I've separated them by color and then made a container for each color with a top that matches. So that's a yogurt container that I colored blue and cut a hole in. He puts the sticks in, brings the container to me, says, "one... two... three!" and I open it up so he can strew them about and start again. I just started mixing two colors and showing him how to sort but right now he prefers to just play with the blue sticks.
Easy peasy! And in case you missed the Facebook spaghetti post:
We've done this activity a few times now (the others there was no diaper so I'll forego posting pictures!) and he LOVES it. Just boil spaghetti in water dyed with food coloring and voila! Colored noodles to play with. I under cook them a little so they don't mush up and fall apart. For Z, this is a good hour of entertainment at least.
He also really likes playing with dry spaghetti noodles, but I think he might be peculiar in that particular passion.

It's like our minds are joined... I hadn't even seen this post yet and my four year old is currently in his room having "rest time" with several large sheets of tissue paper to wrap thing in. He was so excited, you'd think I had given him a puppy.
